MDC offers Learn to Fly Fish class Aug. 18 at Walther Park in DeSoto
DeSOTO, Mo.—When most people think of fly fishing, they may think trout. But it’s also an excellent pastime for relaxing at the water and ramping up angling skills to catch just about any kind of fish.
MDC will host a Learn to Fly Fish program Tuesday, Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. – noon at Walther Park, located at 1551 Veterans Drive in DeSoto. The program is free and open to anyone age 10 years and up.
Fish are predators, and the art of fly fishing makes use of that. The aim is to catch fish by using artificial flies that are cast with a fly rod and a fly line. These flies resemble the insects and minnows fish love to dine on.
“If you’re looking for a family activity to squeeze in before school starts, give the sport of fly fishing a try,” said Matt Murray, MDC conservation educator. “If you need a great place to start, join us at Walther Park.”
This program will delve into the basics of fly fishing. Participants will learn about fly-fishing safety, rod selection, line, backer, leader, and tippet, basic knots, and the fundamentals of fly casting. MDC will provide everything needed for the class, including fly rods.
Due to a limited amount of equipment, advanced registration is required. Participants between the ages of 16 and 65 will need a valid Missouri Fishing Permit. To purchase permits, see, mdc.mo.gov/permits. Participants should also bring a hat, eye protection, water and a folding chair. Those who have their own fly rods are welcome to bring and use them.
