Coordinating Board for Higher Education, State Workforce Development Board convene to expand opportunities for Missouri students, workers, and communities
The Coordinating Board for Higher Education (CBHE) and the State Workforce Development Board (SWDB) held a joint meeting Wednesday, exploring Missouri’s efforts to build a tech-ready workforce, broaden apprenticeships, support justice‑involved individuals through education and reentry, and expand service learning across the work of the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development (MDHEWD).
The boards hosted panels related to each aspect of MDHEWD’s mission to put Missourians on a path to learn, work, and prosper, welcoming representatives from the Missouri Hospital Association, Mercy, St. Charles Community College, University of Central Missouri, Washington University, Lincoln University, Oran R-III School District, Missouri Department of Corrections, and MDHEWD.
“Today’s convening offered a significant opportunity to leverage the collective expertise of leaders from education, workforce, healthcare, and corrections, creating a thoughtful exchange of ideas that demonstrated how every part of our mission is strengthened through collaboration and shared commitment,” said Dr. Bennett Boggs, Commissioner of MDHEWD. “Together, their perspectives shaped a substantive dialogue that helps advance meaningful opportunities for Missouri’s students, job seekers, and employers.”
The joint meeting represented how coordinated efforts in higher education and workforce development support Missouri’s evolving needs. The discussions highlighted the value of collaboration in creating stronger opportunities for Missourians across the state.

In addition to the joint meeting Wednesday morning, both boards held their individual September quarterly meetings. The CBHE met Tuesday to discuss the higher education funding framework, the Fiscal Year 2028 budget, and the adoption of a revised strategic plan. The SWDB met Wednesday afternoon, receiving updates on several initiatives and recent developments related to the Workforce Pell Grant.
