Learn the basics of trapping with MDC this fall in the Southeast Region
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting several beginner’s trapping clinics this fall at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge. This hands-on series will introduce participants to the basics of trapping, including how traps work, how to select the appropriate trap, and how to build a set designed to attract target furbearers. No previous trapping experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided.
The clinics are open to participants age 16 and older. Minors may also participate but must be accompanied by a registered adult.
Permits: Participants 16 and older should have or obtain a Hunter Education Certificate and the appropriate permit before attending the program. Need help? Contact Conservation Educator Sally Hancock at 573-222-3337, ext. 1030.
Trapping 101: Traditional Trap Prep Oct. 6 from 5-7 p.m.
Curious about trapping or have an interest in learning to harvest furbearers but don’t quite know where to start? Join MDC staff, the Missouri Trappers Association, and local trapping experts on Oct. 6 for this free workshop. This hands-on program provides the opportunity to learn traditional and modern preparation and storage, and the skills you need before you hit the field. Trapping 101: Trap Sets (with Hands-On Field Training) Oct. 31 – Nov. 1
Whether you’re looking to build your outdoor skills, try something new, or have always been curious about trapping, this is a great place to start. Join MDC staff for this two-day clinic at Mingo Wildlife Refuge that runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, and from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. Attendees will learn the basics of traps, how they work, building a set to attract a furbearer, and putting the skills to work setting traps in the field. Trapping 101: Hides, Furs, Pelts Nov. 1 from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
Ever wondered what happens after the trap? This is your chance to find out in the last portion of the trapping series. Join MDC staff on Nov. 1 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., where you will learn about green skinning furbearers and learn how to prep furs for preservation.
