Join MDC for variety of programs throughout October in the Ozark Region
WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Whether it’s participating in beginner archery for families or taking part in an introduction to handgun shooting, there’s much fun to be had in the Ozark Region with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) throughout the month of October.

Introduction to Atlatl – Family Event is taking place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Kittie Robertson Soccer Field, 1100 E. 18th Street in Rolla. Registration is encouraged but not required. Learn more at mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/221187
Let’s talk deer
Join Wildlife Biologist Matthew Peter and Conservation Educator Dwight Warnke to learn about deer hunting on MDC conservation areas in the Ozarks through a virtual series. These online events will help participants obtain a higher success rate when hunting within conservation areas. Registration is required.

In addition to the virtual series, MDC will also hold a deer processing workshop Saturday, Oct. 10 from 1-4 p.m. at the Rolla MDC office. Join MDC staff and find out how to skin and process the deer you harvest this year. Learn the steps from skinning and deboning to packaging the venison for your freezer. It’s not just deer
Tune in for Black Bears of Missouri and learn fun facts with a virtual program from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. The bear population continues to increase around the state, so being "Bear Wise" is more important than ever. Register at mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/221572
Elk bugling season is upon us! Learn about the history of the wild elk herd and how they are acclimating to the Ozarks today with Elks in Missouri from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15. Current River Callers and Jacks Fork Jakes in conjunction with MDC and the National Wild Turkey Federation invites kids ages 6-12 to Jakes Day at Twin Pines Conservation Center from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at 20086 Highway 60 in Winona. Introduction to Archery – Family Event in St. James will be 4-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 500 South Bourbeuse in St. James. Learn the basics of shooting the bow and arrow utilizing some of the techniques and methods that have been adopted by the National Archery in the Schools Program. Finish out the busy month with Family Fishing Day 2026 from 9 a.m. to noon at Twin Pines Conservation Education Center. Kick back and enjoy the day with the family under the shade of the pines surrounding the pond at Twin Pines Conservation Center. No fishing license is needed at this catch-and-release event.
