Spring Bend Park to Open This Fall

Located at 2380 Upper Bottom Road, not far from the Missouri River, Spring Bend offers a place to let nature shush the noise of life while you walk through a landscape that could be an oil painting.

Of the park’s 126 acres, about 100 of them are protected in a conservation easement.

“Spring Bend Park is going to be a great place to come and experience nature—to meet people, to relax and to walk outdoors,” says Parks Director Ryan Graham. “The whole place is relatively untouched. You can enjoy birding and wildflowers and animals and basically nature left to its own design.”

The property was donated for a St. Charles County park by the Knowles family of Chesterfield. William S. Knowles was a Monsanto chemist, famous for sharing the 2001 Nobel Prize in chemistry. His team’s research contributed to the development of medications to treat Parkinson’s disease.

The Knowles family used the property as a weekend getaway.

“If a guy that important could relax here and get close to nature, anybody can,” Graham says.

Members of the Knowles family are expected to attend the ribbon cutting to be scheduled.

As work continues, future park visitors will be able to enjoy views of the prairie through natural hiking trails, an elevated boardwalk, and a bridge that will wind through some of the forested areas and over a creek. An education center is part of plans for development in the distant future.

“We’re excited to see how the community enjoys the park and hope it becomes a peaceful space to encounter nature amid all the busyness,” Graham says.

Right now, the park includes a large open-air pavilion, ideal for social gatherings, small group meetups, work meetings or simply a place to work while enjoying nature, with free Wi-Fi available for visitors.

“It’d be a nice place to come for a lunch meeting or to catch up on work, but still enjoy the outdoors and fresh air,” Graham says.

Also included in the first phase are a few smaller, covered picnic areas, adjacent to a rain garden and open prairie.
