Going the Distance: 139th Airman takes on hometown ultramarathon
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — For Tech. Sgt. Calvin Duvall, an Airman assigned to the 139th Aerial Port Flight, 139th Airlift Wing, endurance running is more than a physical challenge. It is an opportunity to demonstrate perseverance, build camaraderie and inspire others.
Duvall participated in the 50-kilometer Show Me Your Free State Marathon and Ultra on Oct. 24, 2026, in St. Joseph, Missouri, alongside fellow Airmen and members of the local running community.
"This is the first ultramarathon to ever be held in St. Joe, and to do it around the base is super cool because I run these same roads all the time," Duvall said.
Inspired by his father and grandfather, who both completed marathons, Duvall began distance running approximately five years ago. Since then, he has progressed to ultramarathons, including the 250-mile Cocodona 250 in Arizona in May 2025.
Duvall credits military service with helping develop the mental resilience necessary to overcome demanding challenges.
"In the military, sometimes you just have to put your head down through the suck and do what you got to do, and make it home and complete the job," Duvall said. "And it's the same thing with ultra running."
Beyond personal accomplishments, Duvall values the opportunity to represent the 139th Airlift Wing while strengthening relationships with fellow Airmen and supporting others pursuing their own fitness goals.
As a father of two young boys, Duvall also hopes his determination will inspire his children to approach life's challenges with confidence.
"I want them to know that they can do literally anything," he said.
Reflecting on his military career, Duvall encourages others to consider the opportunities available through the Air National Guard, including education, career development and lifelong friendships.
"I would say do it because it's the best decision I've ever made," Duvall said. "It gave me so many opportunities later in life."
For Duvall, the lessons learned through military service and endurance running extend far beyond the finish line, demonstrating how discipline, perseverance and a commitment to personal growth can prepare Airmen for challenges both in and out of uniform.
